Connecting The Pieces, Inc. will provide low-income and transitional housing for individuals including men, women, and single parents. We will also assist individuals with education, budgeting, and job seeking resources. Initially, the organization will focus on providing individuals with transitional housing. As we grow, our goal is to implement long-term housing for low-income individuals.
Specific types of housing units utilized by the organization will depend upon availability but many include transitional housing, SRO’s (Single Room Occupancy), single-family housing, and/or apartment units. Connection The Pieces, Inc. anticipates using donations, land trust, and other similar acquisition types to obtain properties. Due to fund constraints, the organization will initially rent housing properties. Our goal is for initial rental agreements to have purchase options built in that allow the organization to purchase the property once funds become available. Eventually, the organization will purchase its properties outright or through mortgage.

Connecting The Pieces, Inc. anticipates referrals for our program to come from a variety of sources. Sources may include, but are not limited to, probation and parole offices, substance use disorders treatment centers, social services agencies, and veterans’ administration agencies. The application process will include an initial telephone screening, an application/intake evaluation, and house meeting (only for transitional housing). Through the intake application, our staff and volunteers will assess individuals’ eligibility for the program; desire to change their lives, and social services needs. During this process, we will explain program and house rules and requirements. For instance, our transitional housing program will be drug and alcohol free, have a curfew for the first couple of weeks; and for individuals without employment they must be seeking employment are taking education courses.
The average length of stay for each resident will vary based upon the resident’s life transition and needs. Transitional housing residents will typically reside in the facility for up to 24 months. At the end of this period, we anticipate many individuals transitioning to our long-term, low-income housing units, which we hope to have obtained. For transitional housing, individual’s length of stay will vary based upon their ability to progress and move toward independence. This will be accomplished by going through our social services offerings that may include, but are not limited to, therapy, group/house meetings, and job location. We will refer individuals out to other nonprofit organizations and government agencies for assistance with job location.
Individuals will pay rent to reside in Connecting The Pieces, Inc.’s housing program. Rents will be set at comparable rates based on other 501(c)(3) transitional housing programs in the Kansas City area. Connecting The Pieces, Inc. will utilize HUD guidelines to determine rates for long-term, low-income housing. For transitional housing, residents will be required to pay rent on Monday of each week. Long-term, low-income housing will have payments due on the standard first of the month. Should individuals not follow program/house rules and/or not make their rental payments the organization will first counsel them to determine the cause and develop a solution. If an individual continues violation of requirements, we well implement additional disciplinary measures including removal from the residence. Removal from the residence will be a last resort once all other options are exhausted.
Residents of our housing facilities will have onsite social services such as case management, therapy, and group/house meetings (transitional housing) made available to them. Topics covered in these services will depend on the needs of each resident but many include addiction recovery, anger management, time management, personal budgeting, expunging of records, applying for assistance programs (i.e. food stamps, social security, VA benefits, etc.), spiritual and mental health counseling; etc. Staff and volunteers will provide residents with these services. The frequency of each social service offering will vary based upon need of residents. Typically, the services will be offered at the housing facility. For those individuals living in single family, low-income housing we will provide the services at various locations convenient to the residents.
